As the Bloodborne PSX Demake Becomes the Latest Fan-Project to Suffer a Copyright Claim, the Creator of Bloodborne's 60fps Mod Has Offered His ‘Copium’ Official Remake Theory
Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are intensifying. Following last week's takedown of the popular 60fps mod by Lance McDonald, Lilith Walther's acclaimed Bloodborne PSX demake has now been targeted. A YouTube video showcasing the demake received a copyright claim from MarkScan Enforcement, a company confirmed by McDonald to be working on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment. This is the same company responsible for the DMCA takedown of McDonald's 60fps mod.
McDonald speculates that Sony's actions are a preemptive measure to clear the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster. He suggests that by removing fan-made content featuring "Bloodborne 60fps" and "Bloodborne remake," Sony could better protect potential trademarks for an official release.
This aggressive approach from Sony comes amidst fervent fan demand for a next-gen patch, remaster, or sequel to the critically acclaimed PS4 title. The recent success of PS4 emulation, enabling near-remaster quality 60fps gameplay on PC, may have further spurred Sony's actions. While Sony has yet to comment, the situation remains shrouded in mystery.
Adding to the intrigue, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered his personal theory on the game's continued absence from the modern gaming landscape. He suggests that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game's creator, is protective of his work and unwilling to allow others to handle a potential remaster or update, a sentiment seemingly respected by the PlayStation team.
Despite Miyazaki's previous statements indicating FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership and his acknowledgement of the game's potential on newer hardware, Bloodborne remains untouched, nearly a decade after its initial release. The ongoing copyright disputes only serve to fuel speculation and fan frustration surrounding the game's future.
