Virtua Fighter Evolves 3D Combat at Evo 2025

Author : Emily Update : Dec 08,2025

Though not playable at Evo, the new Virtua Fighter project emerged as one of the event's standout reveals thanks to an impressive Finals Day trailer offering our clearest glimpse yet at Sega and RGG Studio's revival of this beloved fighting franchise, dormant for over twenty years.

During the show, we sat down with Producer Riichiro Yamada to discuss his vision for modernizing the classic franchise, exploring how it will evolve to compete with contemporary 3D fighters while preserving its legacy.

The prototype shows remarkably fluid animations with precise limb movements blocking individual attacks. How representative is this of the final product?

Riichiro Yamada, Producer: Visually, we're about 70% there. With tomorrow's EVO announcement [recorded pre-trailer], players will see our current progress. We're rapidly closing in on realizing our core vision.

The fighting game landscape has changed dramatically since Virtua Fighter 5. How are you modernizing the series?

Yamada: The original Virtua Fighter succeeded through accessibility - three buttons anyone could master. While VF5 perfected that depth, modernization means advancing both gameplay and functionality. Simply recreating the past won't suffice; we must evolve every aspect to resonate with today's players.

You've described Virtua Fighter's essence as "innovation and reality." Could you elaborate?

Yamada: Innovation today goes beyond graphical leaps - we're exploring fresh concepts beyond technical benchmarks. Regarding reality, we're aiming for that visceral kung-fu movie impact where every strike carries weight, translating that physicality digitally.

Are these redesigned characters like older, hat-wearing Akira meant to reboot the franchise?

Yamada: This is evolution, not rejection. We're enhancing designs while respecting their legacy. Akira's matured look reflects natural progression - we're crafting characters that feel contemporary yet recognizable.

The newly revealed Stella appears connected to Sarah Bryant. What does "bridge between worlds" signify?

Yamada: Apologies, but we can't disclose details yet. Stay tuned!

Will you maintain the classic three-button scheme?

Yamada: The original three-button design brilliantly balanced accessibility and depth. While respecting that philosophy, we're adapting controls for modern home play rather than strict arcade conventions.

Does Akira remain the franchise's face despite his obscured redesign?

Yamada: Akira's legacy resonates powerfully with fans. Like Street Fighter's Ryu or Yakuza's Kiryu, iconic protagonists carry franchise identity. We'll introduce new faces while honoring what makes Akira special.
