Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Nod to JRPG ClassicsSandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is making waves with its unique blend of classic and modern RPG elements. Following a successful demo, the game's director has shed light on its key inspirations.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Fusion of Turn-Based and Real-Time Gameplay

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Unique Blend of MechanicsInspired by the Belle Epoque and the golden age of JRPGs, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 innovatively combines turn-based strategy with real-time action. Drawing heavily from the Final Fantasy and Persona series, the game aims to create a fresh and engaging experience.

Following a strong showing at SGF, creative director Guillaume Broche discussed the game's influences with Eurogamer. A lifelong fan of turn-based combat, Broche sought to create a high-fidelity title in this style, citing Persona and Octopath Traveler as stylistic inspirations. "If nobody wants to do it, I will do it," he stated, explaining his motivation.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: Stunning Visuals and GameplayThe game's narrative centers on preventing a mysterious antagonist, the Paintress, from unleashing death once more. Players will explore unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, while engaging in combat that demands both strategic planning and quick reflexes. The turn-based combat system requires players to react in real-time to enemy attacks, creating a dynamic and engaging experience reminiscent of Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.

Broche expressed surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception. While anticipating interest from turn-based fans, the level of excitement exceeded his expectations.

While acknowledging Persona's influence, Broche clarified to PC Gamer that the Final Fantasy series, particularly entries VIII, IX, and X, had a more profound impact on the game's design. He emphasized that the game is not a direct imitation but rather a reflection of his personal gaming history and preferences. The influence extends to dynamic camera movements and menu design, inspired by Persona, but with a distinct artistic style.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: Exploration and CustomizationIn the open world, players have complete control over their party, switching characters seamlessly and utilizing unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche expressed a desire for players to experiment with character builds and combinations, adding a playful element to the game's design.

The development team, in a PlayStation blog post, expressed their hope that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will resonate with players in the same way classic RPGs impacted them.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
