Beyond the release date, Sandfall Interactive revealed new characters and gameplay details.
Expedition 33's New Faces: Monoco and Esquie
The Expedition 33 roster expands to seven playable characters plus one dedicated to exploration. Meet Monoco and Esquie:
Monoco, a "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," transforms into defeated enemies, leveraging their powers in combat. Gestrals are uniquely immune to the Paintress's influence.
Esquie, a legendary being, is the oldest and strongest in the world. While not directly involved in combat, Esquie unlocks access to various locations on the open-world map. Collecting his special stones grants new abilities and opens up previously unreachable areas.
Remember Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso? These characters, introduced in an October 16, 2024 YouTube video, unite to break the cycle of death.
Innovative Turn-Based Combat and Deep Customization
Sandfall Interactive isn't just focused on visuals; they've reinvented classic turn-based RPG combat (as highlighted in an Xbox Wire article on January 23, 2025). CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche explains, "We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face...every character has their own playstyle...and they all have their unique mechanics and their unique skill tree."
This is achieved through a reactive turn-based system, adding real-time elements like dodging and parrying for increased damage. Difficulty settings adjust the timing window for those without "Sekiro-caliber timing."
Deep character customization is key. Each character boasts unique mechanics and skill trees (like Lune's "Stain" resource). Evolving "Pictos" (equipment modifiers) after four battles yields Luminas—permanent passive effects—further enhancing character builds. With numerous combinations of Luminas, skills, and abilities, players can craft hundreds of unique builds. This reactive system challenges both strategy and reflexes.
