Apex Legends Isn’t Doing the Business for EA, So It’s Making Apex Legends 2.0 to Come Out After Battlefield
EA's recent financial call revealed that while Apex Legends boasts a massive player base exceeding 200 million, its revenue isn't meeting expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the game's success but highlighted the need for improvement in its financial trajectory. He outlined a three-pronged approach: continued support for the existing community through quality-of-life updates, anti-cheat measures, and new content; ongoing development and testing of new content; and, most significantly, the development of Apex Legends 2.0.
Apex Legends 2.0 is envisioned as a major update designed to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and boost revenue. However, its release is planned for after the next Battlefield title, likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year. Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to the franchise, anticipating Apex Legends to remain a significant title for years to come, with Apex Legends 2.0 representing a substantial, but not final, evolution of the game. The update aims to cater to both the existing competitive player base and attract new players.
The planned overhaul bears resemblance to Activision's Warzone 2.0 reboot, although the reception to that update remains mixed. EA will undoubtedly learn from competitor experiences in the battle royale market as it strives to expand Apex Legends' player base. While the game maintains a strong presence on Steam, its concurrent player count is below its peak, underscoring the need for significant changes.
