Nightreign Omits Landmark FromSoftware Feature in Elden Ring
Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is primarily due to the game's anticipated shorter play sessions (approximately 40 minutes each). The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system.
This omission doesn't signify a complete removal of asynchronous features. In fact, the bloodstain mechanic will return, enhanced to allow players to view and even loot the ghosts of fallen opponents. This aligns with FromSoftware's goal of creating a "compressed RPG" with high intensity and minimal downtime, a vision further reflected in the game's planned three-day structure.
The absence of the messaging system is a deliberate choice to streamline the experience and maintain the game's rapid pace. While the system has been a successful engagement tool in previous titles, its inclusion in Nightreign is deemed impractical given the game's design.
Elden Ring Nightreign's release is targeted for 2025, as revealed at TGA 2024, though a precise date remains unannounced.
