Sony Comments on Risk of Losing PS5 Users to PC
Sony isn't concerned about losing PS5 players to PC gaming, according to a company executive. This statement comes from a recent report detailing Sony's PC publishing strategy.
Despite releasing first-party titles on PC since 2020 (starting with Horizon Zero Dawn), and significantly increasing their PC porting efforts after acquiring Nixxes Software in 2021, Sony sees minimal risk of PS5 sales being negatively impacted. A company representative stated during a 2024 investor Q&A that they haven't observed a significant trend of users switching from PS5 to PC.
PS5 sales, at 65.5 million units by November 2024, are remarkably close to the PS4's sales figures after its first four years. Sony attributes any sales difference primarily to PS5 supply chain issues during the pandemic, not competition from PC ports. This strong PS5 performance reinforces their view that PC releases have limited effect on their console's appeal.
Looking ahead, Sony plans a more aggressive PC porting strategy, aiming to reduce the time between PS5 and PC releases. Marvel's Spider-Man 2, launching on PC just 15 months after its PS5 debut, exemplifies this. This contrasts sharply with the over two-year exclusivity enjoyed by Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Other notable titles coming to PC soon include Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (January 23rd). Several high-profile PS5 exclusives remain unannounced for PC, including Gran Turismo 7, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, and the Demon's Souls remake.
