inZOI's Karma System Spurs Town Abandonment

inZOI's cities can transform into ghost towns if an excessive number of Zois die with negative karma. Continue reading to discover more about inZOI's karma system and its upcoming early access launch.
Ghosts Can Overrun inZOI Cities
New Zoi Births Halted by Excessive Ghost Presence

When too many ghosts accumulate in inZOI, entire cities can become ghost towns, potentially altering the city's overall condition. In a recent PC Gamer Magazine feature, inZOI Director Hyungjun Kim discussed how the game's karma system significantly influences player experience.
Kim explained, "Every action a Zoi takes accumulates karma points." He continued, "After death, a karma assessment determines the soul's fate. If their score falls too low, the Zoi turns into a ghost and must redeem their karma before progressing to a new life."
Moreover, if unaddressed, Zois dying with poor karma can drastically transform a city's status. Kim noted, "Excessive ghost appearances prevent new Zois from being born and families from forming, requiring players to actively manage the karma of Zois throughout the city." This adds an additional layer of strategy, as players must maintain karma balance to prevent cities from becoming ghost towns.
Kim clarified, "This system isn't designed to promote only 'good' actions while penalizing 'bad' ones." He added, "Life can't be neatly categorized as purely good or bad; every existence carries its own significance and worth." He emphasized that players should explore inZOI's karma system "to generate varied events and narratives while discovering life's multiple meanings."
inZOI Director Honors The Sims' Lasting Legacy

inZOI may represent the most significant challenge The Sims has faced in the life simulation genre recently. Despite this, Kim doesn't consider their game a direct competitor to the renowned Sims franchise.
He elaborated, "We view Inzoi not as a Sims competitor, but as an alternative choice for genre enthusiasts to enjoy." Kim also expressed his admiration for the franchise, stating, "We deeply respect the legacy The Sims has established over decades, recognizing that achieving such depth in a relatively short timeframe is immensely challenging. This stems from life simulation games' inherent complexity in capturing the broad, multifaceted concept of 'life' in its entirety."
The inZOI team aims to deliver a distinct experience by showcasing their unique capabilities. Kim highlighted, "Inzoi empowers players to freely craft their desired lives using diverse creative tools. To realize this vision, we've incorporated Unreal Engine 5's realistic visuals, comprehensive customization options, and AI-powered creative tools. We encourage players to leverage these features to materialize their imagination, assume protagonistic roles, and inhabit these virtual worlds."
