Witcher 4 Boots Geralt from Lead Role According to VA
Geralt of Rivia's return in The Witcher 4 has been confirmed by voice actor Doug Cockle, but the iconic Witcher won't be the protagonist this time. While he'll feature in the game, the narrative spotlight shifts to a new generation of characters.
Geralt's Role in The Witcher 4
A Supporting Character, Not the Star
Doug Cockle, in an interview with Fall Damage, confirmed Geralt's presence but emphasized his supporting role. The game's focus will be on a new protagonist, leaving Geralt's story largely behind. Cockle himself expressed excitement about discovering the identity of the new lead character.Clues and Speculation
The mystery of the new protagonist remains, but hints exist. A Cat School medallion, featured in an Unreal Engine 5 teaser, suggests a character from this once-feared Witcher school could be the main character. Gwent card game lore also mentions surviving members of the school, fueling this speculation.
Another strong contender is Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter. She possesses a Cat School medallion in the books, and The Witcher 3 subtly hints at this connection by changing Geralt's medallion icon to a Cat School one when players control Ciri. This could see Ciri take the lead, with Geralt possibly acting as a mentor figure.
The Witcher 4's Development and Release
Game director Sebastian Kalemba, in an interview with Lega Nerd, highlighted the game's aim to attract new players while satisfying longtime fans. Development, under the codename "Polaris," began in 2023 with a substantial team of over 400 developers, making it CD Projekt Red's largest project to date.
Despite the considerable resources, a release date is still some years away. CEO Adam Kiciński previously suggested a timeframe of at least three years from October 2022, due to the ambitious scope and the development of new Unreal Engine 5 technology.
