Spider-Man 2 Debuts to 'Mixed' Steam Reviews Amid Serious PC Performance Problems

Author : Lucas Update : Feb 26,2025

Spider-Man 2's PC port, despite promising initial performance benchmarks, has received a mixed reception on Steam due to widespread technical issues. A significant portion of user reviews (45% negative) cite frequent crashes, even on high-end systems equipped with RTX 4090 GPUs and the latest drivers.

One RTX 4090 user reported consistent crashes, stating, "Despite having a high-end GPU and running the latest Nvidia drivers (5.66.36), the game frequently crashes." Another user's experience was even more negative: "The game is completely unplayable on PC. The game crashes to desktop every five minutes. I have already requested a refund." Many reviewers echoed these sentiments, advising potential buyers to wait for performance patches. One user described the game as "rough," citing issues such as incomplete lighting in cutscenes, extremely low frame rates in certain scenes, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and various other performance problems.

A common error message points to display driver problems, suggesting outdated drivers, excessively high in-game settings, GPU overheating, or game-related errors as potential causes.

Beyond crashes, players have reported problems with DLSS and ray tracing functionality, prolonged loading times, missing textures, and audio glitches. Some users experienced performance degradation and eventual crashes after extended play sessions, leading to speculation about potential memory leaks.

Nixxes Software, the porting studio, acknowledged the issues on the Steam forums, directing users to their support website for troubleshooting guides and requesting logs and crash dumps for faster diagnosis. They also confirmed awareness of a bug affecting photo-op missions at low frame rates (below 20 FPS), suggesting lowering graphics settings or resolution as a temporary fix.
