Nintendo Vows to Combat Switch 2 Scalpers with All Measures
Nintendo has made it clear that it’s taking the issue of launch shortages and scalping seriously ahead of the upcoming release of the Switch 2. During a recent discussion following the company's latest financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about potential supply problems similar to those experienced during the original Switch launch in 2017.
When asked what steps the company is taking to prevent another wave of scalper-driven price hikes and limited availability, Furukawa responded confidently:
"We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like). We are making preparations."
This statement, originally shared by Japanese publication Nikkei and later translated by VGC, suggests that Nintendo is not only aware of the challenges but actively working behind the scenes to ensure a smoother launch. One of the most likely strategies? Producing a significantly higher number of units from day one. Last year, the company emphasized that mass production would be key to avoiding the secondary market exploitation that plagued the original Switch at launch.
Back in July 2024, Furukawa reiterated this approach:
"As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand, and this idea has not changed since last year."
He also noted that while semiconductor shortages had previously hindered production of the current-gen Switch, those issues are now resolved—giving Nintendo more flexibility when it comes to manufacturing the next console at scale.
Of course, simply producing more consoles isn’t the only tactic Nintendo may employ. Furukawa added that the company is exploring other legal and region-specific options to further reduce the impact of scalpers, although no specific methods have been officially announced yet.
Looking ahead, Nintendo is set to reveal more about the Switch 2 during its highly anticipated Switch 2 Direct presentation scheduled for April 2, 2025. In addition, global hands-on events are planned in various cities, giving fans a chance to get up close and personal with the new hardware before launch.
Furukawa also commented on the drop in Switch sales, which some analysts attribute to consumers holding off in anticipation of the Switch 2. However, he downplayed that theory:
"We don't think the impact of refraining from purchasing is that great. We think it's a solid eighth year, but we haven't reached our target."
In the meantime, Nintendo remains committed to supporting the original Switch even after the release of its successor—as long as there’s continued demand. This includes major titles such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, both slated for release on the current platform in 2025.
