Brandon Sanderson Says The Wheel of Time Fandom 'Deserved Better' Than a Cancelation After 'The Best Season,' as Over 120,000 Fans Desperate for Season 4 Sign Petition
The Wheel of Time appears to be shelved indefinitely after Amazon canceled the Prime Video series following Season 3, with reports indicating it’s not being pitched to other streamers. Adding to the disappointment, Brandon Sanderson—who completed Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time book series—offered blunt reflections on the decision-makers behind the show.
Last month, Prime Video opted not to renew The Wheel of Time for Season 4, following what Deadline described as “lengthy deliberations.” Executives reportedly liked the series but couldn’t justify its financial burden.
The Wheel of Time is an adaptation of the beloved fantasy saga by Robert Jordan, starring Rosamund Pike. After a rocky start with Seasons 1 and 2 that alienated many book fans due to controversial deviations from the source material, Season 3 won back much of the audience and seemed to lay the groundwork for an even stronger future.
Yet the series proved too costly for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios—the latter of which also produces the similarly expensive The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. As Deadline reported:
...the overall performance of Season 3 wasn’t strong enough relative to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season, and the streamer couldn’t find a viable path forward after evaluating various options and consulting with lead studio Sony TV, sources said.
Let’s begin with Sanderson’s remarks on the cancellation, posted in the comments of a recent video on his YouTube channel.
“I wasn’t really involved,” he started. “I know no more than what’s been made public. They told me they were renegotiating and thought things would work out. Then I heard nothing for two months—only learned about this through the news, like everyone else.”
“I do think it’s a shame. Even with my issues with the show, it had a dedicated fanbase that deserved better than a cancellation after its strongest season. I won’t miss being sidelined; they wanted my name for credibility, but never truly included me in any meaningful way.”
Sanderson clearly held little regard for the show’s leadership, yet he recognized the frustration among fans who saw steady improvement each season and had hoped to see the story reach its conclusion.
Meanwhile, a new report from TVLine claims The Wheel of Time isn’t being shopped to other streaming platforms, dashing hopes for a Season 4 revival. The outlet cited “well-placed sources” confirming the news.
Over 120,000 fans have signed an online petition to “Save The Wheel of Time.” “Finish the story,” the organizers write on their site. “It deserves to be told in full!”
It’s growing more likely these appeals will go unanswered. Some fans pin their hopes on Apple, which has a track record of investing heavily in high-budget sci-fi and fantasy series for Apple TV+. But with its current lineup already packed, such a move feels like a long shot.
In the end, this adaptation of The Wheel of Time seems truly out of time—an又一次令人失望的尝试,将许多人心目中最伟大的奇幻小说系列搬上荧幕。
