Gundam Breaker 4 Review – Steam Deck, Switch, and PS5 Tested
Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms
Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche find for PS Vita enthusiasts. Fast forward to 2024, and Gundam Breaker 4's global, multi-platform release is a monumental achievement for Western fans. After 60 hours across various platforms, I'm captivated, despite a few minor issues.
This isn't just about the game itself; it's a testament to the series' Western accessibility. No more importing Asia English releases! Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish).
The story, while serviceable, isn't the main draw. Early dialogue can feel protracted, but the latter half delivers compelling character reveals and engaging conversations. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though appreciating certain character appearances requires prior series knowledge. The embargo limits my discussion to the first two chapters, which feel relatively straightforward. While I grew fond of the main characters, my favorites appear later.
The true allure lies in Gunpla customization. The depth is astounding. Customize individual parts, weapons (including dual-wielding), and even adjust part size and scale. Mixing and matching, including SD parts, allows for truly unique creations.
Beyond standard parts, builder parts add extra features and skills. EX and OP skills, determined by parts and weapons, enhance combat. Ability cartridges provide further customization options with buffs and debuffs.
Missions reward parts and materials for upgrading and increasing rarity. A recommended part level system guides progression. Grinding isn't necessary on normal difficulty, though higher difficulties (unlocked during the main story) significantly increase the challenge. Optional quests, including a fun survival mode, offer additional rewards.
Customization extends beyond parts: paint jobs, decals, and weathering effects allow for unparalleled personalization. The sheer depth is impressive.
Gameplay is largely excellent. Combat remains engaging, even on easier difficulties. Weapon variety keeps things fresh. Boss fights involve targeting weak points and managing multiple health bars – a satisfying challenge, though one particular boss fight presented some AI-related difficulty.
Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Early environments feel somewhat lacking, but overall variety is good. Gunpla models and animations are exceptional. The art style, while not realistic, works well and scales effectively on lower-end hardware.
Music is a mixed bag, with some forgettable tracks and a few standouts. The lack of anime music packs or custom music options is disappointing.
Voice acting is surprisingly good in both English and Japanese. I preferred the English dub during action sequences.
Minor issues include one repetitive mission type and a few bugs (one seemingly Steam Deck-specific). Load times are notably longer on Switch compared to PS5 and Steam Deck.
Online functionality wasn't fully tested due to pre-launch server issues. I will update this review once online play is thoroughly tested.
My concurrent Master Grade Gunpla build provided a unique perspective. The process highlighted the intricate detail and craftsmanship involved in Gunpla design.
Platform Differences:
- PC: Supports >60fps, mouse & keyboard, and multiple controller profiles. Runs exceptionally well on Steam Deck.
- PS5: 60fps cap, excellent visuals, good rumble support, and PS5 Activity Card integration.
- Switch: Lower resolution, detail, and performance compared to PS5. Assembly and Diorama modes feel sluggish.
DLC: The Deluxe and Ultimate Editions offer additional Gunpla parts and Diorama content. The early unlocks aren't game-changing, but the builder parts are helpful.
Overall: Gundam Breaker 4 is a fantastic entry in the series. While the story is enjoyable, the real draw is the unparalleled customization and engaging gameplay. The PC version, especially on Steam Deck, shines. The Switch version is playable but hampered by performance issues. Highly recommended for Gunpla enthusiasts and action game fans.
