EA Sports FC 25 has had a gameplay overhaul

Electronic Arts' soccer simulators have long been under scrutiny, and it's not just the monetization strategies that draw ire; the technical quality of the games also comes into question. The backlash against EA Sports FC 25 has escalated to such an extent that the developers have taken decisive action. They've rolled out a "Gameplay Refresh Update" featuring over 50 modifications to the game mechanics, targeting various aspects of the gameplay experience. Here are some of the key changes:

  • Significant enhancements to core gameplay systems, including assists, shots, goalkeeper play, and defense mechanics.
  • Addressed frequent issues where defenders were unrealistically catching up to the ball carrier.
  • Improved the fluidity of attacking play, making it easier to maneuver the ball.
  • Decreased the occurrence of reverse tackles and AI interceptions.
  • Reduced the effectiveness of crossing passes.
  • Players now offer quicker support when playing in roles they're accustomed to.
  • Enhanced offside detection during offensive runs by AI-controlled players.
  • Slightly improved the precision of shots taken from outside the penalty area under normal conditions.

Despite these efforts, the initial reception to EA FC 25 has been overwhelmingly negative. Only 36% of the 474 player reviews upon release were positive, highlighting the majority's dissatisfaction. The criticisms span various issues, including perceived greed from Electronic Arts, numerous bugs and crashes, and challenges in recognizing PlayStation controllers.

Moreover, the game's anti-cheat system renders it incompatible with Steam Deck, further frustrating players who prefer gaming on this platform.
