Players & Cards
Tong-Its is designed for three players and uses one standard Anglo-American deck of 52 cards (without jokers). The cards rank as follows: Ace (1 point), 2 through 10 (face value), Jack, Queen, and King (10 points each). An essential rule to remember: Aces are low in this game.
Objective
The goal of Tong-Its is to form sets and runs by drawing and discarding, aiming to minimize the count of unmatched cards in your hand. A run is a sequence of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, like ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J. Note that A-K-Q does not form a run since aces are considered low. A set is made of three or four cards of the same rank, such as ♥7, ♣7, ♦7. Remember, a card can only be part of one combination at a time.
The Deal
The initial dealer is chosen at random, with subsequent deals going to the winner of the previous hand. Cards are dealt counterclockwise, starting with the dealer who receives thirteen cards, while the other players get twelve each. The remaining deck forms the stock, placed face down.
The Play
Each turn in Tong-Its involves the following steps:
- Draw: Begin by taking one card from either the top of the stock or the discard pile. You can only take from the discard pile if you can immediately form a meld (set or run), which you must then expose.
- Exposing Melds: Optionally, you can lay down valid melds from your hand. If drawing from the stock, you're not required to expose a meld. To open your hand, you must lay down at least one meld. A special move allows you to lay down a set of four face down if not drawn from the discard pile, keeping the bonus for a secret set.
- Laying off (sapaw): You may add cards to existing melds, either your own or others', without needing to have opened your hand. This can prevent an opponent from drawing on their next turn.
- Discard: Conclude your turn by discarding one card face up on the discard pile.
