WWE 2K25 Hands-On Preview
WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience
2K's WWE series continues its annual evolution, building upon its successful 2022 relaunch. WWE 2K25 promises several updates, including a new online world ("The Island"), revamped modes (Story, General Manager, Universe), a fresh "Bloodline Rules" match type, and more. However, a recent preview focused primarily on core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode.
The Showcase Mode, centered around The Bloodline, offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and altering history. This allows players to relive iconic moments, craft dream matches, and explore alternate timelines – a significant improvement over previous iterations. While the "Slingshot" system (cutting to real-life footage) is largely absent, a few instances of forced spectator moments remain. The checklist system, while still present, is refined with optional timed objectives and rewards, eliminating the previous penalty for failure. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering a unique and engaging experience for dedicated fans.
Core gameplay retains the familiar grappling system from WWE 2K24, incorporating the welcome return of chain wrestling, a mini-game allowing strategic advantage. The submission system, also returning, features a color-matching mini-game (though optional). Weapon throwing returns, enhanced with new environments (like the WWE archives) and expanded backstage brawls. The inclusion of Prime Hydration bottles as weapons adds a humorous touch. Most notably, intergender matches are now possible, opening up a vast array of previously unavailable matchups.
A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition in a Fight Club-esque setting with lumberjacks, promises a unique and exciting addition. More details will be available soon.
Overall, WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation, making smart, incremental improvements. While the core gameplay remains largely unchanged, the enhancements to Showcase Mode and the inclusion of new features like intergender matches and the Underground mode suggest a worthwhile upgrade for wrestling fans. The full impact of the unplayed modes will determine whether it truly surpasses its predecessors, but initial impressions are positive.
