Tencent Targets Western Audience with Arthurian Knights in Tides of Annihilation
In a revealing interview with Wccftech at Gamescom 2024, the developers of Tides of Annihilation, Eclipse Glow Games, discussed the unique concept behind their upcoming game, which draws heavily from Arthurian legends and is set in a post-apocalyptic London. Dive deeper to understand the game's vision and what players can anticipate.
Tides of Annihilation Targets Western Gamers
Embracing Arthurian Myths and Knights
Eclipse Glow Games, despite being based in China, chose a Western setting for Tides of Annihilation following guidance from their financial backer, Tencent. "This game and Black Myth: Wukong represent two different approaches for Tencent. While Black Myth: Wukong is aimed at the Chinese market, Tides of Annihilation is crafted for a Western audience, hence our decision to incorporate Arthurian legends," explained the game's producer. The narrative revolves around the iconic Knights of the Round Table, led by King Arthur.
The game unfolds in a ravaged, modern-day London, following an Outworld invasion that leaves Gwendolyn as the apparent last human standing. This setting merges with fantasy elements, directly inspired by Arthurian myths, to create a unique gaming experience.
Devil May Cry-inspired Combat and Diverse Boss Challenges
Fans of action-RPGs will notice that Tides of Annihilation's combat system mirrors the dynamic style of Devil May Cry. "Our combat is definitely more like Devil May Cry," the developers confirmed, while also introducing adjustable difficulty settings to cater to a broader player base. The combat is not only thrilling but also customizable, with four weapon choices and over ten different Knights to assist Gwendolyn in her quest through a devastated London.
Gwendolyn discovers her ability to command the Knights of the Round Table, enhancing her journey to uncover the truth behind the invasion. With more than 30 unique bosses to defeat, the game promises engaging and challenging encounters. "Players will need to prepare for intense boss fights," the team emphasized.
Vision for an Expanding Anthology
Looking ahead, Eclipse Glow Games expressed interest in expanding Tides of Annihilation into an anthology, potentially exploring different settings and mythologies with new protagonists. "We aim to retain the Outworld invasion theme in future titles," they noted, hoping to leverage the success of the initial release to bring more diverse mythologies to life.
Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will join Gwendolyn in her epic struggle against fate, striving to save both London and the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon.
