GameStop's Viral Switch 2 Stapler Auction Hits $100K
GameStop is auctioning its notorious stapler responsible for damaging multiple consoles during the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, with bids already exceeding $100,000.
In addition to the stapler and a certificate of authenticity, the eBay listing includes the first refurbished Switch 2 console whose screen was stapled—now fully functional—along with its original punctured box.
"While regrettable, we hope this incident can make a positive impact," said GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen. The winning bidder will also receive Cohen’s underwear, as promised if the auction surpassed $100K.
The retailer made headlines last month after customers reported their Switch 2 screens were stapled by an employee attaching receipts to the packaging.
GameStop replaced the damaged consoles, most from a Staten Island store, and later turned the mishap into a viral marketing campaign promoting new Switch 2 stock.
Beyond the stapler mishap, some fans argue Nintendo should reinforce its Switch 2 packaging. The console’s screen currently rests against thin cardboard with only a flimsy plastic sleeve for protection. IGN reached out to Nintendo regarding possible packaging updates but received no response.

GameStop's certificate brands the stapler an "authentic relic from the 'Staplegate' incident," detailing its role in hastily stapling receipts to Switch 2 boxes in a moment of misplaced enthusiasm. (In truth, it damaged numerous consoles.) The listing highlights its "authentic wear" and retirement from service, cementing its status as a retail legend born from one impulsive act.
As of now, the highest bid for the stapler has reached $108,895.
