Compulsion Games Presents: South of Midnight
South of Midnight's Story and Release Date
Compulsion Games' Zaire Lanier, writer and narrative designer, recently shared details about South of Midnight's narrative and its highly anticipated release date: April 8, 2025. The game unfolds in the mystical town of Prospero, a captivating blend of Southern-inspired locations—from flooded landscapes and murky swamps to the majestic Appalachian mountains.
The story begins amidst a hurricane's fury, with Hazel, our protagonist, and her mother preparing for the storm. A disagreement leads Hazel to leave their home, only to witness its tragic destruction by the raging flood. Her quest to find her lost mother unexpectedly unveils her true heritage, thrusting her into a fantastical realm teeming with creatures straight out of Southern folklore.
Lanier describes a pivotal encounter: "Hazel encounters Catfish, a colossal—and surprisingly talkative—creature trapped in a tree after the hurricane. Catfish reveals Hazel's destiny as a Weaver, a being with magical abilities to perceive and manipulate the threads connecting all fates."
This revelation empowers Hazel to see and weave the universe's threads, but her journey is fraught with peril. Haints, corrupted creatures spreading decay, stand in her path. Hazel must master her Weaving powers to cleanse them and restore balance to the world.
Embark on Hazel's Deep South adventure early—access the game on April 3, 2025, with the Premium Edition ($49.99) on Steam or the Xbox Store. The standard edition is priced at $39.99, and Game Pass subscribers can enjoy day-one access.
Gameplay: Threads, Weaving, and Combat
South of Midnight introduces a unique gameplay mechanic: Weaving. Hazel utilizes threads, the very fabric of fate, to manipulate the world around her. Combat involves strategic use of spells and abilities unlocked as she confronts various Haints.
Game director Jasmin Roy explains the core combat loop at the Xbox Developer Direct 2025: "Players utilize 'Push,' 'Pull,' and 'Weave' spells for tactical advantages. Timing is crucial. Pull enemies closer for melee combos, push them back to interrupt attacks, then unleash devastating follow-up strikes."
Hazel's arsenal includes a spindle, weaving hooks, and a distaff, tools inspired by traditional textile crafting. These provide diverse combat options and abilities, allowing players to purify the Haints.
Weaving extends beyond combat; it's key to exploration and puzzle-solving. Hazel conjures "past incarnations of objects," such as a spectral carriage or glider, using her powers to navigate the environment.
Hazel's journey takes her through diverse regions, each with its unique theme and mythical creature ruler, as described by art director Whitney Clayton. Two-Toed Tom, a colossal albino alligator, is one such formidable guardian.
To heal these corrupted creatures, Hazel must collect Echoes—fragments of haunted memories—before engaging in epic confrontations. By defeating and then healing them, she progresses on her quest.
Hazel's journey to reunite with her mother is a captivating blend of exploration, combat, and magical weaving, promising a truly unforgettable adventure.
