Rompopolo makes its debut in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. As you journey through the Oilwell Basin region toward Azuz City, you'll encounter this formidable monster. Defeating Rompopolo is essential to progress in the game. Once you've triumphed over it at least once, Rompopolo will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide, allowing you to track and battle it repeatedly in the Oilwell Basin or through the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest in your Tent.

To prepare for the battle against Rompopolo, arm yourself with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, equip gear that offers fire resistance, which can also be farmed from Uth Duna or Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general defense charm like Defense Charm I. Before the fight, don't forget to boost your health and stamina by grilling a meal.

Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo's unique bipedal form and gas-filled, saggy skin give it a distinctive set of attacks centered around gas and explosions. Be prepared for poison status ailments and carry Antidotes, as your Palico can help cleanse these ailments. Here are the main attacks to watch out for:

  • Arm Swipe – Rompopolo will swipe forward twice with its clawed arms. This attack has limited range and is easy to dodge.
  • Lunge With Arm Swipe – Rompopolo charges forward, raising both arms to perform an arcing swipe attack.
  • Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail toward its target in another physical attack.
  • Poison Stream or Swipe – Rompopolo either sprays a stream of poison gas or charges forward while swinging its head and spraying poison.
  • Oil Explosion – From a distance, Rompopolo uses its tail stinger to inject gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodging is crucial.
  • Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo will curl its tail underneath and pump more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodge this to avoid significant damage.

Should You Kill or Capture Rompopolo?

In *Monster Hunter Wilds*, as in previous games, you have the option to either kill or capture Rompopolo at the end of the battle. To capture, weaken the monster until your Palico notes it looks "tired," then use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it. Once trapped, a Tranq Bomb will knock it out, completing the capture.

Both capturing and killing yield rewards, with some items exclusive to each method. While the exact differences are still to be confirmed, here are the potential item drops from Rompopolo:
