PlayStation Stars Program Ends After 3 Years: Shutdown Announced

Author : Joshua Update : May 26,2025

Sony has decided to terminate its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, which it launched just under three years ago. As of today, new sign-ups are no longer accepted, and current members who choose to leave will be unable to rejoin. Upon cancellation, their reward points will be permanently deleted.

Existing members can continue to earn points until July 23, 2025, and have until November 3, 2026, to redeem any remaining points. Despite the program's closure, Sony assures that PlayStation Stars' Digital Collectibles, such as the 3D digital model of a Jim Ryan bobblehead, will remain accessible indefinitely.

Grace Chen, PlayStation's vice president of network advertising, loyalty, and licensed merchandise, explained the decision in a statement on the PlayStation blog. She noted that since the launch of the program, Sony has gathered significant insights into player preferences and industry trends. "Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars," Chen said. "We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings."

Sony has not announced any plans for a replacement program, and the specifics of their findings from running PlayStation Stars remain undisclosed.

Launched in July 2022, PlayStation Stars was designed to reward PS5 owners with points that had real cash value, based on their spending in the PlayStation Store and completing tasks like surveys or trying out new games and system features. The program competed with Microsoft's Xbox Rewards, but over time, both loyalty schemes have seen adjustments that reduced their profitability.

Last summer, PlayStation Stars was unavailable for a month due to service issues. In October, Sony introduced several changes, including reducing the point expiration period from 24 months to 12 months and removing PlayStation Plus membership from the list of points-eligible purchases. Now, the program is being phased out entirely.
