PlayStation: Majority of Gamers Opt for Rest Mode Over Powering Off

Author : Camila Update : Feb 18,2025

A surprising statistic reveals that half of all PlayStation 5 users bypass the console's rest mode, opting instead for a complete system shutdown. This finding, shared by Cory Gasaway, Sony Interactive Entertainment's VP of game, product, and player experiences, highlights a significant design challenge for the PlayStation team. The data, uncovered during an interview with Stephen Totilo, influenced the development of the PS5's Welcome Hub, a feature designed to create a more unified user experience despite this diverse range of preferences.

The Welcome Hub, initially conceived during a PlayStation hackathon, directly addresses the 50/50 split in rest mode usage. Gasaway explained that the Hub's design provides a consistent starting point for all PS5 users, regardless of their rest mode habits. For US users, this means landing on the PS5 Explore page, while users elsewhere see their most recently played game. This customizable interface aims to provide a more cohesive experience across the user base.

While no single reason explains the widespread avoidance of rest mode, user forum discussions suggest potential contributing factors. Some players report interference with internet functionality when rest mode is enabled, preferring to keep their consoles fully powered on for downloads. Others, however, experience no such issues and utilize the feature without problems. Regardless of the individual reasons, Gasaway's insights offer valuable context into the complexities of PS5 user interface design and the importance of catering to a broad spectrum of user behaviors.
