Hello again, readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer’s warmth has faded, leaving behind memories of sun-drenched days. I've learned a thing or two this season, and I'm thankful for sharing it with all of you. As autumn arrives, I want to express my gratitude for your companionship – you're the best gaming buddies anyone could ask for! Today's article is packed with game reviews, new releases, and exciting sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's previously unlocalized adventures. This collection masterfully builds upon storylines from earlier games, particularly the second title, which enhances the first in retrospect. It’s fantastic to finally experience these games in English.

The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain largely the same – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, and solving cases – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality add a distinctive flavor. Although the pacing can sometimes feel uneven, fans of the main Ace Attorney series will find much to enjoy. If the first game seems slow, persevere – the second is significantly better and provides context to the first.

This collection boasts impressive extras, similar to the Apollo Justice set. A gallery featuring art and music, a story mode for relaxed play, and selectable original/updated graphics and soundtracks are included. A handy dialog history feature, a welcome addition to the series, allows you to review past conversations.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling dual experience. The official localization of the second game is a triumph, and the bonus features elevate the overall package. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney title (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've already played the other titles, this is a must-have addition.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising development. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel to the NES classic stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels provide a demanding experience, though an easier mode is now available. The protagonist, Yumetaro, utilizes his star in various ways, solving puzzles and overcoming obstacles. Collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for completing difficult sections.

The game's difficulty mirrors the original, leading to numerous, often comical, deaths. However, generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and lively music help maintain a positive tone, but don't underestimate the challenge. Mastering platforming skills and using Yumetaro's star effectively is key.

Gimmick! 2 is a remarkably successful sequel, successfully building upon the original while forging its own identity. Fans of the first game will be delighted, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely give it a try. However, those seeking a casual experience should be aware of its demanding gameplay.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, abandoning the original's action-platformer style for a shoot 'em up experience reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it works, although the Switch's hardware sometimes struggles to deliver optimal performance. Despite this limitation, the intense action, rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals make for an engaging experience.

The game's weapon system adds a strategic layer. Managing the main gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon, while utilizing the dash maneuver, is crucial for survival. Mastering this rhythm is both challenging and rewarding.

While different from its predecessor, Valfaris: Mecha Therion retains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids many genre clichés. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version delivers a satisfying experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater primarily to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in fan service, providing a satisfying experience for those familiar with the franchise. The writing is well-done, and the meta-systems reward dedicated players.

However, for non-fans, the appeal is limited. The mini-games are repetitive, and the storyline will likely only resonate with those familiar with the Umamusume universe. Even fans might find the limited gameplay underwhelming.

While the game successfully captures the look and feel of Umamusume, the emphasis on fan service overshadows the gameplay. The abundance of unlockables might keep dedicated fans engaged, but the overall experience lacks depth and longevity, especially for newcomers.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit games. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized and include save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. This is the first time these games have received an official English release.

The games offer a varied experience. 53 Stations is challenging due to its awkward weapon mechanics, but its unique theme adds charm. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola, while ambitious, is somewhat uneven. While not top-tier NES titles, they offer a unique and enjoyable retro experience.

Fans of Sunsoft and retro game enthusiasts will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of these games, along with their long-awaited English localization, makes this a worthwhile purchase.

Cyborg Force ($9.95)

A challenging run-and-gun action game in the style of Metal Slug and Contra, offering both single-player and local multiplayer modes. Fans of the genre should find it enjoyable.

Billy’s Game Show ($7.99)

A game where you explore while evading a stalker, requiring hiding and avoiding traps while maintaining power. Thematically similar to Five Nights at Freddy's, but with different gameplay.

A straightforward mining game using mechs, where you collect resources, upgrade your equipment, and progress deeper into the mine. A simple but potentially enjoyable experience.
