Once Human sits pretty at 230,000 peak player count, but it\'s still a long way out from mobile

NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, has achieved a remarkable 230,000 peak concurrent players on Steam since its PC launch. This impressive figure secured the game the seventh spot on Steam's top sellers and fifth place on the most-played list. However, this initial success is tempered by the possibility of a player decline, a concern given the game's initial Steam wishlist count of under 300,000.

Scheduled for a mobile release in September, Once Human has already announced exciting updates. These include a PvP mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a new PvE area in a challenging northern mountain region, introducing fresh enemies and challenges. Set in a world ravaged by a catastrophic event with supernatural elements, Once Human is a highly anticipated title from NetEase.

Interestingly, despite its apparent readiness, NetEase has delayed the mobile launch, maintaining a September release date. Nevertheless, the game's strong initial performance on Steam remains noteworthy.

A Cause for Concern?

The use of "peak" player count is significant. The average player count is likely lower, and a post-launch drop from the peak could be a worrying sign for NetEase. This is especially true considering the game's initial Steam wishlist numbers.

NetEase, known for its mobile game successes, is making a significant push into the PC market. While Once Human boasts impressive graphics and gameplay, a rapid shift in primary audience might prove challenging.

Despite this, the mobile release of Once Human remains highly anticipated. In the meantime, check out our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far) and the most anticipated mobile games of the year for more gaming options!
