When you begin a new game in *Stardew Valley*, you're given the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog, which becomes your farm's loyal pet. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that. To unlock the ability to adopt more pets, you'll need to meet certain in-game milestones.

First, you must maximize your friendship level with your current pet. This involves daily tasks like filling their water bowl with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when nature takes care of it. Additionally, make sure to interact with your pet every day; a heart bubble over their head signifies you've successfully petted them. Monitor your pet's friendship meter in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.

Once you've filled the friendship meter, you'll receive a notification from Marnie via mail, informing you of additional pets available for adoption at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted your first pet by the start of Year 2, Marnie will send you this notice then.

At the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option to view a list of 12 Pet Licenses, which include five varieties of dogs and cats, plus two types of turtles. Be prepared to spend a significant amount of in-game currency, as each license comes with a cost.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley

After choosing your new pets, visit Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls are essential as they not only provide water but also serve as the pet's home, preventing their friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting these bowls could lead to your pets running away, a loss you'll want to avoid given the investment in their adoption.

You can find Pet Bowls in Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, each costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood, which you can obtain with a Copper Axe or better. It's wise to buy these before adopting your new pets to ensure you maintain their friendship levels from the start.
