GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'
The release of Trailer 2 for *Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6)* has sent the long-running GTA 6 Mapping Project into high gear. With over 370 members (soon to reach 400) on the GTA 6 Mapping Discord, the community is abuzz with excitement and new tasks. Garza, who manages the Discord server, told IGN, "It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year. We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."
The project kicked off following the significant leaks in September 2022, which some fans think Rockstar subtly nodded to at the beginning of Trailer 2. Until now, the mapping efforts were primarily based on those leaks and the information from December 2023's Trailer 1. However, the latest trailer has rendered the previous map version, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, outdated. The new trailer offers a wealth of fresh details that will help create a more accurate and comprehensive map.
Rockstar's Trailer 2 not only confirmed plot details and introduced new characters but also released 70 brand new screenshots of GTA 6. It revealed more about the explorable areas within the state of Leonida, the game's rendition of Florida. Confirmed locations include Vice City (akin to Miami), the tropical Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and the northern landmark, Mount Kalaga.
The dedicated volunteers are now meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of everything shown, striving to align the fictional settings with real-world counterparts. Their goal is to refine GTA 6's map further. Once complete, DuPz0r will release an updated version, giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect when GTA 6 launches in May 2026.
Should Rockstar release more assets or gameplay footage before the game's release, the team is ready to dive back in and update their work accordingly. Only upon the game's release will they be able to compare their fan-created map with the actual game, measuring the accuracy of their efforts.

However, the project faces a looming threat from Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, which could potentially shut it down. This concern was highlighted in March when a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 ceased work after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. The mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.
Last year, Garza expressed "some mild concern" about potential action from Take-Two. "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community," he said. "However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."
While we await further developments, stay tuned for more on GTA 6, including all the details we've discovered so far and all the GTA 6 fan theories emerging from Trailer 2 itself.
