PlayStation's New Studio Takes on Bungie's "Gummy Bears" MOBA

A PlayStation studio has reportedly taken over development of a mysterious MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) codenamed "Gummy Bears," originally conceived at Bungie. This unique title, rumored to be in development since at least 2022, is expected to target a younger audience than Bungie's previous projects.

The project, initially reported in August 2023, has undergone a significant shift. Following Bungie's workforce reduction and integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment, a new PlayStation studio, comprised of approximately 40 former Bungie employees, has assumed responsibility for Gummy Bears. While a release date remains elusive, the game's development continues.

A Smash Bros. Inspired Mechanic:

Gummy Bears distinguishes itself with a novel approach to combat. Instead of traditional health bars, the game utilizes a percentage-based damage system reminiscent of the Super Smash Bros. series. Higher damage percentages result in increasingly powerful knockback effects, culminating in characters being launched off the map.

Gameplay and Aesthetics:

The game will reportedly feature the standard MOBA character classes: Attack, Defense, and Support. Multiple game modes are planned, and the overall aesthetic is described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi"—a stark contrast to Bungie's previous, grittier titles. This stylistic shift aims to attract a younger demographic.

The transfer of Gummy Bears to a new PlayStation studio, potentially located in Los Angeles, aligns with recent announcements of PlayStation's expansion into new development territories. While the game is still years from release, its unique mechanics and target audience make it a noteworthy addition to the PlayStation first-party lineup.
