Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a feature long requested by fans: subclasses. This exciting update enhances gameplay by allowing players to mix and match skill lines. Read on to discover how this works and what future updates hold for the game.

As ESO celebrates its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios has announced significant developments during the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10. One of the most anticipated updates is the introduction of subclassing, a feature fans have been requesting for over a decade.

In traditional MMOs, players often find it frustrating to start anew just to access new skill trees. With subclasses, ESO addresses this issue by allowing players to swap classes without the need to reroll characters. Upon reaching level 50, players can retain one skill line from their original class and swap out two others with any from the six available classes. This change opens up over 3000 unique combinations, enabling players to tailor their gameplay to their preferred style.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert has expressed confidence in this new system, stating that extensive testing has been conducted. Despite potential concerns about increased power levels, Lambert assures that the developers are content with the balance achieved.

ZeniMax Online is shifting towards seasonal content, a move that Studio Director Matt Firor believes will allow for more experimentation and responsiveness to player feedback. He stated, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems. We'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."

The upcoming chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, is a sequel to the original Molag Bal storyline, set 10 years in the making. Players will explore the Isle of Solstice, investigating the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath noted that while this season will span most of the year, future seasons will be shorter, lasting 3 to 6 months. ZeniMax plans to introduce "remix" seasons, revisiting past narratives, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
