"Elden Ring's Nightreign Director Admits Duos Were Neglected, Focus on Trios"
Elden Ring Nightreign is set to immerse players in the dynamic landscapes of Limveld, where they can explore and battle for survival either solo or in groups of three. However, those who prefer playing in duos will need to be open to including a third player, as the game currently does not support a dedicated two-player option.
In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki explained that the oversight of not including a duo option was due to the development focus on solo and three-player experiences. "The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that," Ishizaki stated. He emphasized that the game was designed as a multiplayer co-op experience balanced for three players, which was the core focus of Nightreign.
Ishizaki also acknowledged the importance of solo play, noting that the team put significant effort into ensuring the game was enjoyable for single players within the framework of the game's rules and new systems. "Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start," he said. He added that while the team overlooked the duo aspect, it is something they are considering for post-launch support.
For players who enjoy playing in duos, be prepared to welcome a third player into your adventures. It might lead to meeting skilled players who can enhance your gaming experience.
For solo players, Ishizaki assured that Elden Ring Nightreign adjusts dynamically to the number of players in a session, ensuring that lone wolves won't feel overwhelmed. Solo players will need to locate self-revive options, which are specifically included to support single-player gameplay. Meanwhile, the game is built around trios, suggesting that having an extra player could be beneficial when facing the game's challenging bosses.
Elden Ring Nightreign is scheduled for release on May 30, 2025, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X and S.
