Xu Wu is an incredibly agile boss in Monster Hunter Wilds. Its unpredictable movements can be frustrating to anticipate due to its unique shape. Like Nu Udra, Xu Wu's black skin makes it difficult to discern its front side. Besides dealing with its multiple arms, you must also be wary of the monster's ability to slip into walls and disappear momentarily. It often reappears on the ceiling, attempting to drop down on you. This tactic is exclusive to its nest, so remain extra vigilant when fighting in this area.
Use Ice Attacks
In Monster Hunter Wilds, Xu Wu is particularly vulnerable to Ice-based attacks. If you're using a ranged weapon, consider Ice ammo. For melee combat, equip gear that inflicts Ice elemental damage. Enhancing your equipment with a Frost Jewel decoration will grant you the Ice Attack skill, boosting your effectiveness. Carrying a Frost Pod is also wise, as it can deal minor Ice damage to the creature.
Avoid the Grab Attack
Xu Wu employs a variety of attacks, including tentacle strikes and diving maneuvers. It also has a grab attack that, if successful, will prevent you from using your regular weapons. You have about two seconds to escape. The best way to break free is by using your slinger, with Frost Pods proving especially effective against this monster.
Attack Xu Wu’s Mouth
The mouth of Xu Wu is its most vulnerable point, though it's hidden beneath its body. You'll typically only see it when the monster dives toward you. Landing a powerful attack during this window can cause significant damage and potentially break its mouth, rewarding you with Xu Wu’s fang. If the mouth is unreachable, target the monster's head, which has a 4-star weakness to blunt and cut damage and a 3-star weakness to ammo damage.
Use Poison
Xu Wu has a 3-star weakness to Poison, making it an effective status ailment to use. A bow equipped with Poison Coating is particularly useful for applying this effect. While other status ailments can be used, avoid Sleep, as it's less effective against Xu Wu.
