Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Stamps Out Live Service Game Talk Amid Backlash to 'FOMO' Community Events
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developers address "FOMO" concerns after community event backlash. The game's creators, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive, have clarified their intentions regarding community events following criticism that they promoted "fear of missing out" (FOMO), a common tactic in live-service games.
While Space Marine 2 doesn't feature loot boxes, recent community events offered cosmetic rewards accessible only within limited timeframes. This sparked a negative reaction, with some labeling the game as heading towards a full live-service model.
In response, the developers acknowledged the negative feedback, stating that the events caused unintended FOMO. They assured players that all items currently available through these events will be made available to everyone later. Their statement emphasized that the intention was to offer early access to dedicated players, not to create frustration. They apologized for the issues and are working on streamlining the item acquisition process.
To mitigate the situation, they are offering the Mk VIII Errant Helmet (previously only obtainable through a challenging community event) for free to all players who link their Focus Entertainment PROS account to the game. This event concludes on March 3rd.
The upcoming 7.0 update is anticipated to introduce new content, including a weapon, an Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, addressing previous concerns about content scarcity. The game's successful launch, selling over 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer game ever, underscores its popularity. However, the developers’ response highlights their commitment to addressing player concerns and refining their approach to community events.
