The story begins with the Nohara family's move to a serene village in Akita Prefecture, prompted by Hiroshi's new job near his hometown. Early in the game, Shinnosuke, affectionately known as Shin Chan, explores the countryside with his grandfather Ginnosuke. Activities include fishing in Akita's rivers, catching bugs in the groves, and learning farming techniques from his grandmother.

The plot thickens when the family dog, Shiro, returns home covered in soot and dashes away. Intrigued, Shin Chan follows him, leading to a mysterious train that whisks him away to Coal Town—a place seemingly untouched since the Showa era.

Coal Town presents a stark contrast to the peaceful countryside, bustling with workers and steeped in retro charm. The town features a children's park, a diner, various shops and restaurants, and an apartment block. While some elements are interactive, others serve as atmospheric backdrops.

In Coal Town, Shin Chan meets Yuri, a young and innovative inventor. She enlists his help in gathering materials for her experiments, aimed at improving the lives of the townsfolk. However, her older brother Chuck introduces a 'waste-free' system that backfires, causing chaos. Players must assist Yuri in thwarting Chuck's plans and restoring harmony to Coal Town.
