Saros Is Housemarque’s Successor to Returnal, Arriving in 2026
Housemarque has unveiled Saros, the eagerly awaited sequel to their 2022 roguelite hit, Returnal. Scheduled for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5 and optimized for PS5 Pro, Saros stars Rahul Kohli and promises to deliver a thrilling experience.
The game was showcased during the latest PlayStation State of Play, where it was clear that Saros retains the signature Housemarque style. Players will take on the role of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer, as he navigates a perilous, ever-changing planet shadowed by an eclipse and inhabited by at least one formidable entity. The game's theme of "come back stronger" and its intense fireball sequences hint at the roguelike and bullet-hell elements fans have come to expect from Housemarque.
Creative Director Gregory Louden describes Saros as the "ultimate evolution" of Housemarque's gameplay-first approach. While it introduces a new single-player IP, it builds upon the third-person action mechanics established in Returnal. However, Saros introduces significant gameplay differences from its predecessor. As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Louden emphasizes that while the world of Saros transforms upon the player's death, players can also permanently enhance their weapons and suits. This new feature adds a layer of progression and strategy to the game.
Fans can look forward to more information later this year, as Housemarque plans to reveal an extended gameplay demonstration.
