PlayStation Plus subscribers will get five extra days for free
Sony has addressed the widespread PlayStation Network (PSN) outage that crippled services for nearly a full day this weekend. While the company acknowledged an "operational issue" in a social media post, specifics regarding the cause and preventative measures remain undisclosed.
As recompense for the disruption, PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a five-day extension to their subscriptions, automatically applied to their accounts.
The outage significantly impacted gameplay, with over one-third of players unable to log in and widespread reports of server crashes.
This incident underscores concerns among players who have long criticized Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player games on PC. The reliance on PSN for even offline experiences leaves players vulnerable to these disruptions.
This isn't the first major PSN outage. The April 2011 data breach resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While less severe, the recent outage has left many PS5 users frustrated by the lack of detailed explanation and preventative measures from Sony.
