Mortal Kombat 1 Dev Chief Ed Boon Teases T-1000 Fatality and ‘Future DLC’
Mortal Kombat 1 creative director Ed Boon recently shared a sneak peek of the T-1000 Terminator's upcoming Fatality on social media, simultaneously teasing "future DLC." This reveal coincided with the announcement that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, a significant jump from the previously reported four million, following the release of guest character Conan the Barbarian.
Boon tweeted a short video showcasing the T-1000's brutal Fatality, a clear nod to the iconic Terminator 2 truck chase scene. The accompanying tweet, however, sparked considerable excitement within the Mortal Kombat community: "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!"
While this statement could simply refer to the impending arrival of the T-1000, the phrasing has fueled speculation about additional DLC characters beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion, which includes Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian, and the soon-to-be-released T-1000. Fans have long anticipated a potential Kombat Pack 3, particularly given the game's sales success.
Warner Bros. Discovery's continued investment in the Mortal Kombat franchise lends credence to this possibility. CEO David Zaslav recently stated the company plans to double down on four key titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. Ed Boon himself previously confirmed NetherRealm's next game was decided three years prior, while promising continued support for Mortal Kombat 1 "for a long time to come."
Many fans anticipate a third installment in the Injustice fighting game franchise, though neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The development timeline for Mortal Kombat 1, a soft reboot released in 2023, deviated from the previously established alternating release pattern between Mortal Kombat and Injustice games (Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, Injustice 2 in 2017, Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019).
In a 2023 interview with IGN, Boon cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to Unreal Engine 4 (from Unreal Engine 3 used in Mortal Kombat 11) as contributing factors to this shift, clarifying that the Injustice franchise remains a possibility. He explicitly stated that the door is "not at all" closed on future Injustice games.
