Hogwarts Legacy 2 to Integrate with HBO's Harry Potter Series

Warner Bros. has announced plans to weave a unified narrative universe, linking the eagerly awaited Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the forthcoming Harry Potter TV series on HBO. Discover more about their vision below.

J.K. Rowling to Have Limited Role in Franchise Oversight

Warner Bros. Interactive has confirmed that the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in development and will feature direct connections to the Harry Potter TV series, slated for a 2026 premiere on HBO. With the original game selling over 30 million copies since its 2023 launch, it ranks among the top-performing titles in recent years.
“Fans have been eager for more content in this universe, and we’re focused on delivering that,” said David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, in an interview with Variety. He highlighted a collaborative effort with Warner Bros. Television to craft a cohesive narrative between the game, set in the 1800s, and the TV series. Despite the timeline difference, the two will share thematic elements and overarching storytelling threads.

While details about the HBO series remain limited, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, noted that it will “delve deeply into the beloved books that have captivated fans for decades.” These stories, already explored in films and novels, continue to inspire widespread devotion.
A key challenge lies in preserving the game’s distinct identity while seamlessly integrating it with the TV series, avoiding contrived connections. Though the historical gap poses questions, fans are thrilled at the prospect of new lore or insights into Hogwarts and its legendary figures emerging from this partnership.
Haddad emphasized that the original Hogwarts Legacy’s success sparked renewed enthusiasm for the franchise across all platforms. “The broader company took notice of what we achieved with Hogwarts Legacy,” he remarked.

Variety reports that J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter series author, will not directly oversee the franchise. Warner Bros. Discovery keeps her informed via her literary agent, and Robert Oberschelp, head of global consumer products, stressed, “We ensure alignment on any decisions that extend beyond established canon.”
Rowling’s controversial remarks have sparked debate, leading to a 2023 boycott of Hogwarts Legacy over her transphobic comments. Despite the boycott’s intent to impact sales, the game became one of the best-selling titles ever, surpassing iconic games like GTA San Andreas and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Importantly, Rowling’s minimal involvement ensures her controversial views will not influence the game or HBO series, offering reassurance to fans.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Release Likely to Align with Harry Potter HBO Series

Warner Bros. aims to launch the HBO series in 2026 or 2027, suggesting the Hogwarts Legacy sequel will likely follow a similar timeline. Gunnar Widenfels, Warner Bros. Discovery CFO, noted in September that “a Hogwarts Legacy successor is a major priority in the coming years.”
Developing a follow-up to one of 2023’s biggest games will take time. Game8 predicts a release window of 2027 to 2028 as the most likely scenario.
