In an exciting turn of events, Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios has announced their next venture in the series, and it's not what fans were expecting. On April 24, via a Twitter (X) post, they introduced Frostpunk 1886, a remake of the original game, now powered by the Unreal Engine.

The announcement detailed that the game will include a brand new Purpose Path, the much-anticipated mod support, and more, all while preserving the essence of the original. In a subsequent Steam post on the same day, the developers elaborated on their vision for this ambitious project.

11 bit Studios is transitioning from their in-house Liquid Engine, which powered the first game, to the more versatile Unreal Engine. This shift was influenced by their experience with Frostpunk 2, developed using Unreal Engine 5. They now aim to leverage Unreal's capabilities to enhance the original Frostpunk with improved visuals, higher resolution, and other advanced features. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.

Eyeing A 2027 Release

The development of Frostpunk 1886 is well underway, with the team targeting a 2027 release. This project is designed to serve as an excellent entry point for new players into the Frostpunk universe, while also providing seasoned fans with a game they'll want to experience again and again.

The studio has also hinted at future expansions with potential DLCs, aiming to release games more frequently than once every five years, starting with Frostpunk 1886. In the interim, fans can look forward to Frostpunk 2's free major update on May 8, a console launch in the summer, and other exciting updates as outlined in their roadmap.
