This collaboration includes a fully draftable, Standard-legal set alongside the four Commander decks. Each deck boasts 100 cards, blending reprints with new Final Fantasy-inspired art and brand-new cards designed specifically for Commander.
The design team at Wizards of the Coast selected these four games based on gameplay potential and story recognition. While Final Fantasy VII and XIV were easy choices, FFVI and FFX were chosen due to their popularity among the development team. The entire team's passion for Final Fantasy fueled the development process.
The Final Fantasy VII deck captures the original game's narrative while incorporating the modern aesthetics of the Remake trilogy. The art blends elements from both, offering a nostalgic yet updated experience.
Final Fantasy VI, with its pixel art origins, presented unique challenges. The team consulted directly with the FFVI team to modernize the character designs while maintaining their iconic feel, blending elements from original concept art, sprites, and the Pixel Remaster.
Commander deck leaders were carefully chosen. While Cloud was a natural fit for FFVII, other choices involved deliberation. Ultimately, Terra (FFVI), Tidus (FFX), and Y'shtola (FFXIV during her Shadowbringers arc) were selected as commanders. The Y'shtola deck focuses on her spellcasting abilities and storyline.
Each deck's color identity and gameplay were strategically designed. All four decks incorporate White, enabling a broad range of heroes and thematic consistency. The FFVI deck focuses on graveyard strategies, FFVII on equipment and "power matters" cards, FFX on creature empowerment mirroring the Sphere Grid, and FFXIV on non-creature spellcasting.
Beyond the commanders, each deck features beloved characters from their respective games. While specifics are under wraps, expect many favorite characters and villains represented as legendary creatures and on spells.
The Final Fantasy set launches June 13th, featuring both regular and Collector’s Edition decks (MSRP $69.99 and $149.99, respectively). The Collector’s Edition decks feature all 100 cards with special Surge foil treatment. While these four games are highlighted, all sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games will be represented across the entire product line.
