The developers behind Dune: Awakening have officially confirmed the game will launch without requiring monthly subscriptions. Continue reading for updates about the game's development and available purchase options.
Dune: Awakening Launches May 20
Full Release Without Subscription Model
Funcom has clarified that Dune: Awakening's May 20 debut will be a complete launch, not early access. A recent Steam blog post on March 21 outlined details about the game's business approach, hardware requirements, and future updates.
This multiplayer survival adaptation of the classic 1965 sci-fi novel breaks from traditional MMO subscription models used by titles like Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft. Instead, Dune: Awakening will receive ongoing free expansions adding fresh content and improvements.
The studio emphasized their long-term commitment, drawing on decades of live service experience with games like Anarchy Online (approaching 25 years) and Conan Exiles (still receiving regular updates).
Pre-Orders Available With Special Editions
The developers announced optional paid DLC content alongside imminent pre-orders. By March 24, three distinct editions appeared on the official site:
All pre-order purchases (Standard, Deluxe, or Ultimate editions) include:
- Terrarium of Muad'Dib decorative item
- Sunset Dye customization pattern
Deluxe and Ultimate editions grant 5-day early access starting May 15. The Deluxe package contains:
- 4-DLC Season Pass (including Arrakis wildlife decor)
- Sardaukar Bator Armor cosmetic
- Base game copy
The Ultimate edition expands on this with additional digital bonuses:
- Exclusive vehicle color patterns
- Film-inspired building pieces
- Paul Atreides' movie stillsuit
- 50-page digital artbook
- 90-minute soundtrack
