Dominoes are part of a set, often referred to as a deck or pack. The traditional Sino-European set includes 28 dominoes, known by various nicknames such as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino is a rectangular tile divided into two square ends by a line, with each end displaying a number of spots or being blank. Similar to playing cards or dice, domino sets are versatile gaming devices used for a variety of games. Extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are used for games such as Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Each country has its favorite domino games: England enjoys Muggins (All Fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican Train, and Spain prefers Matador.
The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a mystery.
General Rules of Dominoes:
Blocking Game
The simplest variant is for two players using a double six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, with the remainder unused. Tiles are placed on-edge for privacy, allowing players to see their own tiles but not others'. Players can track the number of tiles in opponents' hands. One player starts by playing a tile, known as downing, which begins the line of play. The starting tile varies by game: in Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6); in Bergen, it's 0-0; and in Mexican Train, it's the next lower double. Players take turns extending the line of play by matching values on adjacent tiles. The game concludes when a player plays their last tile or the game is blocked, with the player causing the block scoring the points of the remaining tiles.
Scoring Game
Points are scored during gameplay for specific configurations, moves, or emptying one's hand. Scoring games often use variations of the draw game. In Muggins (All Fives), players score by making the open ends of the layout sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the open ends match. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile and another player calls it, the first player must draw an extra tile. In Mexican Train, the double zero domino scores 50 points.
Draw Game
In draw games (blocking or scoring), players can draw additional tiles from the stock before playing. The score is calculated from the pips on the losing player's remaining tiles plus those in the stock, typically leaving two tiles in the stock. The Draw game is commonly referred to as simply "dominos."
