World of Warcraft Getting More Expensive in One Region
Blizzard has announced that World of Warcraft players in Australia and New Zealand will face increased fees for all in-game transactions starting February 7. This decision comes in response to global and regional market conditions, affecting monthly subscriptions and other services like WoW Tokens. Players were given just one month's notice of these changes, which will see the monthly subscription rate rise from AUD 19.95 to AUD 23.95 in Australia and from NZD 23.99 to NZD 26.99 in New Zealand. Annual subscriptions will also see a hike, capping at AUD 249.00 and NZD 280.68. Other services such as name changes, race changes, and character boosts will also see price increases.
Despite these adjustments, Blizzard has maintained the US monthly subscription price at $14.99 since the game's launch in 2004. The current conversion rate suggests that the new prices in Australia and New Zealand will align closely with the US rates in the short term. However, the fluctuating strength of the AUD and NZD could impact this alignment over time.
Blizzard has assured that World of Warcraft players with recurring subscriptions as of February 6 will retain their current rates for up to six months. This move has sparked a mix of criticism and acceptance among the player base, with some arguing that the changes bring the prices in line with the US dollar, while others feel the increase is unjustified.
Blizzard emphasized that these price adjustments were not made lightly and reflect the company's response to rising costs and market conditions. Historically, Blizzard has used player feedback to adjust its pricing strategies, and the long-term impact of these changes in Australia and New Zealand remains to be seen.
