Sydney Sweeney in Final Talks for Live-Action Gundam Film Role

Author : Olivia Update : Apr 15,2025

Sydney Sweeney, renowned for her roles in HBO's *Euphoria*, *The White Lotus*, and the recent superhero film *Madame Web*, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to star in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, *Mobile Suit Gundam*. This exciting development follows the confirmation in February that the project, a collaboration between Bandai Namco and Legendary, has entered production.

The film, yet to be officially named, is set to be written and directed by Kim Mickle, known for her work on *Sweet Tooth*. While specific plot details and a release window remain under wraps, a teaser poster has been released, hinting at the thrilling world of *Gundam* that awaits fans.

According to Variety, Sweeney's involvement in the *Gundam* movie is a significant addition to the project, though details about her character and the plot are still undisclosed. Sweeney's recent projects also include *Reality*, *Anyone but You*, and she was attached to star in and produce a film based on a horror story from a Reddit thread last month.

In a joint statement, Legendary and Bandai Namco expressed their commitment to the project, stating, "We plan to steadily announce details as they become finalized." They also highlighted the significance of *Mobile Suit Gundam*, which first aired in 1979, in establishing the 'real robot anime' genre. This genre is distinguished by its realistic portrayal of war, detailed scientific exploration, and complex human dramas, treating robots as 'weapons' known as 'mobile suits'. This approach sparked a massive boom in the anime world, diverging from the traditional good vs. evil narratives of earlier robot anime.
