Steam Users Decry Civilization 7 Launch
Civilization VII's rocky launch has left many Firaxis fans disappointed. Steam reviews, currently numbering over 1,000 and averaging a dismal 37%, paint a picture of a game plagued by significant issues.
Players overwhelmingly cite a subpar user interface, outdated graphics, and a general feeling of incompleteness. One user, Cool CGI Dog, after just 1.5 hours of gameplay, described the experience as "blatantly incomplete," highlighting "resource icons from 1998," a "terrible interface," and an overall lack of polish. They felt the game's $70 price tag was unjustified, stating, "Sid Meyer himself slapped me around and spat in my mouth. I also didn't agree to it."
Another player, WillNever, echoed these sentiments after 2.5 hours, characterizing the interface as an "alpha phase" design that hasn't been updated. While acknowledging intriguing new mechanics, they emphasized the interface's detrimental impact on gameplay, suggesting "months of tweaking" are needed to make the game enjoyable.
The prevalent opinion among reviewers is that Civilization VII was released prematurely and needs substantial improvements. The $70 price point is frequently criticized as disproportionate to the game's current state.
The series' dedicated fanbase hopes Firaxis will address the criticism through updates, restoring the game to the high standards expected of the Civilization franchise. While the series is known for its quality and attention to detail, Civilization VII, in its current form, falls far short of this legacy.
