1047 Games, the creators of the popular "Halo meets Portal" shooter Splitgate, has unveiled its sequel, Splitgate 2, launching in 2025. This new installment promises a fresh take on the fast-paced arena shooter experience while retaining the core elements that made the original a hit.

A Familiar Feel, a Brand New Game

The cinematic announcement trailer, released July 18th, showcases a visually stunning game built on Unreal Engine 5. While retaining the signature portal mechanics, 1047 Games emphasizes a redesigned approach, aiming for a deeper, more rewarding gameplay loop. CEO Ian Proulx stated their goal is to create a game with lasting appeal for a decade or more. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlighted the refined portal system, ensuring both casual and expert players find it engaging.

Splitgate 2 will be free-to-play and available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. A key addition is a faction system, adding strategic depth without transforming the game into a hero shooter. Expect a completely fresh experience, though the core gameplay remains familiar.

New Factions, Maps, and More

The trailer introduces the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions: Aeros (focused on speed), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). These factions add strategic layers to the gameplay, but the developers have confirmed that Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.

While specific gameplay details remain under wraps until Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer hints at exciting new maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding. The developers assure fans that the trailer accurately reflects the game's visuals and core mechanics.

No Single-Player, but a Richer Lore

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, a mobile companion app will offer comics and character cards to delve deeper into the game's lore. Players can even take a quiz to determine which faction best suits their playstyle.
