The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key improvements in noise cancellation and comfort. The XM5 features a second processor and double the microphone count, dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The earcups have been redesigned to fit more snugly on the ear, creating a better seal and thus more effective passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation in the XM5 is noticeably better than in the XM4 and outperforms most other noise-canceling headsets in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 sports a sleeker redesign with an updated headband adjustment style. The band is wider than before, improving weight distribution, and the earcup padding is now made of a luxurious synthetic leather material that's softer and more comfortable.
