Sony Removes PS3 Classics Resistance Games from PS5 and PS4 in Major PS Plus Overhaul
Next month, PlayStation Plus subscribers will see a significant change in their game library as 22 titles are set to be removed on May 20, including popular games like Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This move marks a notable shift in the availability of these games, particularly for those without physical copies or older consoles.
PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service for PlayStation platforms, offering a range of benefits such as free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer, and exclusive member discounts. Additionally, it provides a catalog of hundreds of current and classic games accessible to Extra and Premium members, enhancing the gaming experience with a diverse selection of titles.
As highlighted by Push Square, the upcoming removal of these 22 games from the PS Plus Premium library includes two significant first-party Sony PS3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, both of which are scheduled to leave the service. This is particularly notable as these games are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the final option for playing them without owning both the games and a functional PS3.

The Resistance series, developed by Insomniac Games following their work on Ratchet and Clank, offers an alternate history first-person shooter experience. The series, which includes three PS3 releases, has been dormant since Insomniac shifted focus to other projects such as Marvel's Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank games. The removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 comes less than a year after they were added to the PS Plus Premium library at the end of 2024.
While Sony's decision to remove first-party titles from the service is unusual, it is not unprecedented, as seen with the unexpected removal of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West in August 2024. Unlike the Horizon games, which remained available for purchase, the removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 means they will no longer be accessible on modern consoles.
It's worth noting that Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service, along with other titles. Additionally, the PS4 game InFamous: Second Son is also set to leave PS Plus.
Insomniac's efforts to develop a fourth installment in the Resistance series were revealed by outgoing president Ted Price, but unfortunately, the project did not move forward. This mirrors the fate of other series like Guerrilla's Killzone, which have also seen reduced activity.
