Sony to Remove PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus in 2024

Author : Henry Update : Apr 09,2025

Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus service, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 games starting in January 2026. This change was revealed in a PlayStation Blog post that also detailed the February 2025 monthly game lineup. The transition means that PlayStation 4 games will no longer be a staple of the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog. However, this update won't impact the PS4 titles that subscribers have already claimed; those will remain accessible. For the Games Catalog, PS4 titles will be playable until they are rotated out of the catalog as part of the regular monthly refresh.

Sony's statement emphasizes their commitment to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to continue optimizing subscriber benefits such as exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, and cloud storage for game saves. As the company moves forward, it plans to introduce new PS5 titles every month, catering to the growing number of players who have transitioned to the newer console. According to Sony, a significant portion of their user base is now playing on PS5 and prefers accessing PS5 titles.

It remains uncertain whether Sony will reclassify PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features titles from the original PlayStation, PS2, and PS3. Any such changes are expected to be announced closer to the implementation date.

The PS4, launched in 2013, was succeeded by the PS5 in 2020. With over a decade since its release and more than four years since the PS5's debut, Sony acknowledges that many players have migrated to the newer system, showing a clear preference for PS5 titles.
