Sony's Secret Los Angeles Studio: A New AAA PlayStation Game in Development

A recently surfaced job posting confirms Sony's establishment of a new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This brings the total number of PlayStation first-party studios to twenty, and the team is reportedly working on a highly anticipated, original AAA title for the PS5.

The news has generated significant excitement among gaming enthusiasts. PlayStation's first-party studios are renowned for their high-quality games, and announcements from studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games always create a buzz. Sony's strategic acquisitions of studios like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite in recent years have further strengthened its first-party lineup. This new, unannounced studio adds another intriguing element to the mix.

The Los Angeles-based studio, currently unnamed, is developing a "groundbreaking" original IP. This information emerged from a job listing for a Project Senior Producer, which explicitly mentioned the recently established AAA studio.

Two Leading Theories Regarding the Studio's Origins:

One theory suggests the studio may be a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the Gummybears incubation project. This followed Bungie layoffs in July 2024, where 155 employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Another strong contender is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, which was developing a AAA PS5 title before its closure in March 2024. Following Blundell's departure from Deviation Games in 2022, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation under Blundell's leadership in May 2024. Considering the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's plausible that this is the studio in question. The new project might even be a continuation or a reimagining of Deviation Games' previous work.

While any concrete details about the game remain under wraps, and an official announcement may be years away, the existence of this new studio is exciting news for PlayStation fans, promising yet another first-party title on the horizon.
