Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Hints
Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Fans of the Deadpool & Wolverine director can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the project is still very much alive. In fact, we've received a reassuring update directly from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am excited too," Tropper told Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm for the film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Currently shrouded in mystery, one of the few confirmed details about the film is its setting, which takes place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified the film's timeline, stating in an interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future... It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the era following The Rise of Skywalker.
In the same conversation, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling might star in the film, adding to the anticipation.
Tropper’s optimistic words hint that progress is being made on Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the earliest we can expect to see the film is late 2026, if not 2027.
It's been a while since Disney released a Star Wars film, with the last being the much-discussed Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Since then, Disney has canceled several projects, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni, set in his Mando-verse; a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold; and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-The Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen some shifts, with screenwriter Steven Knight stepping away after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future plans, with reports suggesting she'll feature in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Disney's Star Wars slate doesn't stop there. It was announced late last year that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is developing a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial rumors, won't continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to hit screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode, promising an action-packed start to the new season.
