The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will portray Abby differently than in the game. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the muscular physique of the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over constant violent action. The show's Abby will be "physically more vulnerable," but with a stronger spirit, as showrunner Craig Mazin notes. This allows for a different exploration of Abby's formidable nature.

Season 2's narrative structure differs from Season 1, which adapted the first game entirely. Druckmann and Mazin plan to extend the adaptation of Part 2 beyond a single season, aiming for a "natural breakpoint" at the end of the seven-episode Season 2.

The controversial nature of Abby's character in the game led to online harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and Laura Bailey (Abby's voice actress). This online abuse even prompted HBO to provide extra security for Dever during filming. Actress Isabel Merced (Dina) highlights the absurdity of the hate directed at a fictional character.
